Create folder-like nesting
I have a house that has a bedroom in it which has a box in it and a safe it that box - I want to be able to show that within Compartments, instead of having one big list that has House, House-My Bedroom, My Bedroom- Safe, etc.

iphone app to add items w/photos
A Compartments app to easily take photos and add items, then to sync with the main application.
83 votesAgreed! An iPhone app would be an excellent companion. The priorities right now are to finish Compartments 2.0, then turn attention to the iPhone app.

Request Barcode Scanning Feature
A weak area preventing this from being a truly great app is its data import. Getting a complete home inventory is a lengthy process, any tools to speed this up is useful.
My suggestion is to add either a barcode scanning function or a way to import data that has already been scanned (e.g. iPhone RedLaser app). Even a text file import feature in the interim would significantly reduce time spent typing out tedious product info. Thanks

Add password protection to access inventory data
The information contained in the home inventory database is very personal to each user. Since most people work on laptops, losing our device or having it stolen is a constant worry. It's more important than ever to protect personal info whenever we can.

csv import / export
Make it possible to bring in information from other programmes / sources via generic mechanism of a csv file.
An export as cvs would also address suggestions of others to specifically export to spreadsheet and / or iWeb etc.

Save pictures as jpg
Offer the possibility to choose the image format of the images saved in the Images folder in a less space-consuming format (jpg), rather than the current tif

Quantity with Value Calculation
It would be great to be able to enter quantity for items and have the value calculate automatically. For example, I have 3 of the same bookcases which are each worth $50. If I enter the value at $50 and then change the quantity to 3 it would automatically value it at $150 and add a tag indicating how many I have, instead of manually entering something like "(2)" in the title or notes.
29 votesQuantity field coming soon in Compartments 1.7

Add import from Delicious Library
It would be cool if I was able to import all of my books, movies, and music cd's from Delicious Library right into Compartments.

Encryption of inventory data
This relates to wmcd33's suggestion to add password protection to protect the inventory data. If your laptop is stolen, Compartments will give anyone a nice list of things of value in your household, possibly including your safety box. I consider this a safety risk and would not use Compartments for anything of value unless I knew the data was encrypted. Is adding a password enough for that? Encryption of the data sounds more assuring to me.

Add attachments by Drag-and-Drop onto paper clip
The Add-attachment UI is not very discoverable or usable.
The user must click on the paperclip icon, and then click Add Attachment. To be more usable:
1. The paper-clip icon should be a drop target, so I can drag file icons from Finder onto the paper clip.2. In the Attachments window, the list of attachments should also be a drop target.
(See how the Accoungts -> Login Items UI works, for an example.)19 votes -
More flexibility with Date Acquired
Is it possible to be more flexible with the Date Acquired field? For example, I might know that I got something in 2009, or in Feb of 2010, rather than "Unknown". For the moment, I've started putting those non-specific dates into Notes, but it would be great to add those dates properly. Thankyou.

New fields: Purchased from and the Purchase Price
In this scenario the current Value field woudl record the replacement cost of the item or its insured value.

Auto Value
Calculate approximate value automatically by linking to Amazon or another online marketplace. This will keep approximate values accurate for many items like DVDs, helping maintain a more accurate report.

Reports on Collections
Allow a report to be grouped on or filtered by collection. I am using tags as I move to determine what should be moved, sold, donated, etc. Would love to get a report grouping all items by these tags.

Lifetime Warranty
There should be a Lifetime Warranty option. Currently, only a numerical value may be entered.

Add a URL Field for Items
Most items could have a URL associated with them for either a manufacturer's website, informational page, additional photos, etc. Although it can currently be added in the Notes section, it would be nice to have a clickable hyperlink that would open up in your default browser.

Compartments: Allow Smart Collection by Value
I use Compartments to create a home inventory so I know how much I need to insure my home content for. Insurance companies usually ask for items above a certain value. It would be great to be able to specify a smart collection for this. That way I could extract the required data without tagging each item individually.
